John started his career working in the racing industry in Lambourn. Having gone there straight from school John has never lost his passion for the sport. He has bred, trained and ridden point to pointers, national hunt, and flat race horses to the winner’s enclosure. However, his favourite and most successful were Anglo-Arab flat race horses where he had tremendous success.
On the yard, John specialises in getting horses jumping and regularly helps liveries with their jumping style and confidence.
John used to team chase with the Boring Gorings and led them to second place at the 2005 national team chase championships. He was also trainer to the late Phillip Scouller giving him his 50th winner at Tweseldown on Sulphur Springs.
John now focuses his time being the master of the Berks and Bucks Draghound Hunt as well as training two point-to-pointers which are both qualified and already starting racing.
Liveries regularly join John for a day with the Hunt over the winter. It has proven excellent in getting horses ready for their cross country – as well as being a great day out!
Having over 25 years experience both running a busy competition yard and riding herself, in both eventing and show jumping, Chloe is uniquely placed to train, help and support liveries and their horses.
This includes training programs, fitness regimes and finding the best horse for a rider for a successful partnership.
Chloe produces top class event horses for professionals and amateurs. With an eye for a good four year old, she buys the youngster broken or unbroken and manages all schooling, training and fitness work from the yard.
When they start out on their competitive career the horses are carefully paired with the best professional rider to help them progress smoothly into eventing.
We employ experienced grooms who have already worked with competition horses in various discipline. Each groom will look after and care for the same group of horses daily. This consistency enables them to get to know each horse incredibly well and spot immediately, if there is a change in health or demeanor.
We believe our customer’s horses should only be ridden by people we would trust to ride our own, so we invest a great deal in the training of our staff. Our staff receive regular training on livery horses, using the same instructors that we use for ourselves.
We are very lucky to have some of the best in the business!
Hayley and Rebecca are our head girls together so that the yard is running to the highest standard.

Rebecca Ruffell – Joint Head Girl

Rebecca has competed in the Prince Phillip Mounted games and BSJA on many ponies. Also through out her working life, she has worked on a polo yard, livery yard as Yard Manager. Whilst at her last place of work Rebecca had the responsibility to handle and ride horses that were ‘naughty’ for their owners.
Harriet Boddy – Groom
After gaining a degree in ‘Equine Science’, Harriet has been working with horses full time. She has worked on a variety of yards from Hunting to Therapy centres.
Harriet has been very lucky to work with stunt horses which were used in famous films such as Les Miserables and War Horse. After this Harriet then went to work for a 4* event rider, traveling to international events. She then went into Equine insurance, but found herself being drawn back into the eventing world and we are lucky to have Harriet here at Brookfield
Sami Beckett – Groom
Sami studied at BCA college for 3 years and left with a diploma in Horse Management. After studying, Sami then went to work at an eventing yard as a groom and then turned her hand to become a nursing groom at a veterinary hospital. Sami then decided to try coming away from horses but couldn’t stay away so started freelancing for a while within dressage and show jumping before joining our team here at Brookfield.
Having her own horse has enabled Sami to compete in show jumping and regularly hunted.
Charlotte Ward – Groom
Charlotte has been with us at Brookfield for a while now and has proven to be a great asset to the team. She has a National diploma and Higher National Diploma in Equine Management which helps in her everyday work.
At her previous employment on a show jumping yard, Charlotte has competed BSJA up to newcomers which has helped us when training our livery horses.
Charlotte also has her own horse which is kept in livery at Brookfield so that she can get the very best out of him from all of our trainers we have come to Brookfield.
